Leonard Bernstein and China

Actors and dancers perform in Leonard Bernstein's musical in two acts West Side Story, 19 November 2007 at Paris' Chatelet Theatre. A new cast and touring company was formed on the 50th anniversary of the groundbreaking Broadway musical that explores the clash between rival teenage gangs and ethnicities on the west side of Manhattan, based loosely on William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. This cast will perform the musical in France from 20 November to 01 January 2008. AFP PHOTO PIERRE VERDY (Photo credit should read PIERRE VERDY/AFP/Getty Images)

This week on Sinica, Kaiser Kuo and David Moser are delighted to host Alexander Bernstein, son of Leonard Berstein and director of the Bernstein Family Foundation, who is now in China on part of a cultural tour. Accompanied by Alison Friedman of Ping Pong Productions and mezzo soprano Carla Dirlikov, Alexander joins us for a discussion on music, Broadway, the strengths and weaknesses of musical theater in China, and of course Bernstein’s impressions of China itself
