As part of the 2016 Sino-France Croisements Festival, we brought France's Centre Chorégraphique National Ballet de Lorraine and their triple-bill "Paris - New York - Paris" to the National Centre for the Performing Arts Opera House for their Mainland China premiere. In partnership with the Minsheng Gallery of Art, we also presented one of the company's signature gallery performance pieces together with a workshop for local Beijing art lovers.
Founded in 1968, Centre Chorégraphique National - Ballet de Lorraine is one of the most important dance companies in Europe, supporting and performing contemporary creations while retaining and programming a rich and extensive repertory.
"Paris - New York - Paris" covers close to 100 years of dance history, starting with what could be considered one of the first performative “happenings,” an “instantist” ballet, Relâche, created by Francis Picabia and Erik Satie in 1924. The journey continues with a new piece, Corps de ballet, choreographed by Noé Soulier, a young award-winning French choreographer. The program closes with Merce Cunningham’s Sounddance, coming out of 1970’s New York.
This performance transformed my understanding of ballet, turning my attention to an entirely new way of reading a dancer's expression on so many more levels. Thank you for bringing such an incredible production to China, and for giving us such a spectacular night!
Professor Zhai Zheng, Beijing Foreign Studies University
I witnessed the evolution of dance history in these three works. The entire evening took the audience's breath away. Thank you for bringing such an amazing performance. Spectacular.
